VISUAL ARTS TERM ONE OVERVIEW

Exploration: 

Talking about how they make us feel or what’s happening. Using their imagination, they will think about what the pictures are saying and then create a group of pictures based on a theme, like shapes or animals. Finally, the preps will share the story behind the pictures they have made and explain their ideas.

Discovery: 

In Term One, Discovery Grade One students will explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, focusing on the use of colours, shapes, and patterns to tell stories and represent nature. Students will learn to identify and explain the meanings behind different art elements, experiment with textures, and create their own artwork inspired by nature. By the end of this unit, they will have the skills to confidently create and share their art, explaining their choices and what the artwork represents.

Discovery Grade Two is learning to describe what we see in artworks and create their own pieces. Students will explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, discussing why it is made for special events and how it tells stories and shares ideas. Using materials like chalk, paint, and pastels, students will experiment with creating lines and marks, both messy and neat, to express their own ideas. At the end, students will share artwork, explaining what materials were used and why certain choices were made.

Curiosity: 

In Term One, Curiosity Grade Three are learning to express their thoughts about artworks and experiment with different materials to create their own. Students will explore why artists make art and the ideas they share, as well as understand collaborative art and its meaning. The Curiosity students will also focus on making art balanced and interesting, using colour and light to convey feelings or depth. Finally, students will select and present their best artwork, explaining how they created it.

Curiosity Grade Four is learning to analyse artworks and apply this understanding to create their own unique pieces. Students will compare artworks from different cultures and time periods, explore how different artists create art and use various materials, and experiment with these techniques to express different feelings. Curiosity students will also focus on creating meaningful art, using materials to convey ideas or emotions. By the end of the unit, students will select the best way to present and share artwork with others.

Challenge: 

In Term One, Challenge Grade Five students are learning to discuss the meaning behind cultural artworks and use various techniques to express their own creativity. Students will explore how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art plays a crucial role in keeping culture alive and sharing important messages. Grade 5 students will also discuss how this art tells stories or shares ideas by experimenting with colour and shapes to convey different moods and feelings in their own work. Using different techniques, they will create art that reflects their ideas and emotions. Finally, Students will choose their best artwork, explain the process behind it, and share what they have learned through this creative journey.

Challenge Grade Six will learn to critically evaluate and create original artworks using advanced techniques. We will explore how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art preserves culture and shares important messages and investigate the meaning behind designs and patterns. We will experiment with printmaking, using materials like foam to add textures and patterns and plan our artwork to best express our ideas. Finally, students will present their art in a class exhibition, creating labels to explain its meaning.
